Garden Maintenance and Soil Restoration

A good garden needs a few things to come together to be healthy and enjoyable. It all begins with the soil. Good soil is for gardens and plants what good bones are for us. Without a healthy foundation it is impossible to grow a healthy garden. The best way to succeed with a beautiful garden is to have perfect garden soil.

There can be many reasons that the soil in your garden needs rejuvenation. These include poor soil quality from the beginning. Your yard may not have the type of soil that can sustain a healthy garden due to, for example, a high clay content.

Soil restoration methods will vary to some degree. Depending on the area you live in and where you buy your soil, you can run into quality issues due to a high sand content, pebbles and rocks throughout the soil, and one of the worst cases is that the soil arrives to your home contaminated with a pest or even multiple pests.

Soil Restoration

Soil restoration can be defined as the process of improving the quality of the healthy bacteria and the level of accessible nutrients available to the plants. Carbon levels must also be addressed in this description. This can be a huge determinant in how the soil will handle water retention.

The best way to begin the restoration process is to analyze your current soil conditions and, based on the findings, then start by adding nutrients to garden soil. These nutrients can come in the form of organic fertilizer, included organic animal waste. For many gardens, a single application will bring incredible results.

It would best be done early in the season. After that, depending on certain factors, an annual application for a few Springs would deliver the best consistent results.

Once the soil has been brought up to a healthy level, then the next stage will be ongoing garden maintenance. This would include seasonal pruning and clean ups. A goal being that the garden plants become the organic material that feeds the future garden plantings.

Maintenance levels will be determined by the types of planting you choose. Some will be annual, some perennial. As well climate will play a big role in the time required to maintain your garden throughout the year.
